Associate Borzu Sabahi was a guest speaker at the first Oxford University Press Webinar on investment arbitration, “Is the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties Dead in BIT Arbitration?” The Webinar, held on October 20, 2014, was the first and the pilot program for a series of upcoming Oxford seminars hosted by the Oxford's Investment Claims website. More than 500 individuals registered and 100 participated in the live presentations.
Mr. Sabahi, an editor of Oxford's Investment Claims, was joined on the panel by Prof. Andrea Bjorklund of McGill University, Prof. Frederick Sourgens of Washburn School of Law, and Dr. Todd Weiler, a practitioner. Ian Laird of Crowell & Moring LL, chief editor of Investment Claims moderated the session.
The debate was partly fueled by two new books written by the panelists: a forthcoming book by Professor Sourgens titled “A Nascent Notion of Common Law” and a 2014 book published by Dr. Weiler on interpretation of investment treaties. The next Webinar will focus on corruption issues in investment arbitration and will take place in early 2015.
