IBA Annual Conference in Mexico City: Curtis Partners Address Diverse Panels

Curtis partners Claudia Frutos-Peterson, Santiago Corcuera-Cabezut and John Balouziyeh will participate in three panels at the International Bar Association (IBA) Annual Conference in Mexico City, which takes place from September 15-20, 2024.

The IBA Annual Conference is the leading conference for legal professionals worldwide to meet, share knowledge, build contacts and develop business. It serves to advance the development of international law and its role in business and society, to provide members with world-class professional development opportunities to enable them to deliver outstanding legal services.

  • Curtis Washington D.C. Managing Partner, Claudia Frutos-Peterson, will be co-moderating a session on conflicts of interests in international arbitration. This will take as a starting point the newly updated IBA Guidelines on Conflicts of Interest 2024, which feature the well-known traffic-light system of red, orange and green lists, which have become a global norm. A group of experts will discuss the thinking behind the changes made, as well as those not made, and reflect on the continued use of the Guidelines on Conflicts of Interest for international arbitrations around the globe.
  • Curtis Mexico City partner, Santiago Corcuera-Cabezut will be speaking on a panel, which discusses the challenges, policy and future of immigration detention as they have developed over the past 20 years, and the phenomenon of the corporate player in immigration detention centers across various jurisdictions. This session will explore the challenges and governance of immigration detention centers, concepts of arbitrary detention and its violations arising worldwide, rights of detainees and potential solutions.
  • Curtis New York Partner John Balouziyeh will speak on a panel entitled “Financial and personal costs of human rights litigation: how to go the distance?” The panel, sponsored by the IBA Human Rights Law Committee, will delve into how litigation financing and other elements have changed the landscape of human rights litigation. Mr. Balouziyeh will address how corporate actors can minimize their exposure to claims alleging violations of international human rights law. He will also discuss factors that have in recent years led to a proliferation of cases alleging corporate liability for human rights abuses.
