On The Road To A Sustainable Future: Eco-Design And The Green Revolution

Please download the full client alert here.

European legislators have addressed issues of overproduction and product waste in the fashion and textile industry with EU Regulation 2024/1781 on ecodesign. The Regulation, which came into force on July 18, 2024, imposes new obligations on companies to curb the damage caused by the overproduction of textiles.

In order to be prepared for the new requirements and obligations of the Regulation, companies should implement new policies and internal procedures to avoid being caught unprepared and avoid sanctions.

The main objective of the Regulation is to promote sustainable production and consumption patterns in the fashion and textile industry. In particular, the EU tends towards environmentally sustainable design, which aims to reduce the environmental impact throughout the product value chain, from the design and production phase to the end of the product’s life cycle. The Regulation also aims to facilitate the recycling of materials and promote a circular economy in this sector. At the same time, it aims to promote trade in durable, high-quality products in order to reduce the need for frequent purchases. Another important aim of the Regulation is to counteract the destruction of unsold materials.

This Client Alert aims to provide readers with a general overview of the requirements of the new regulation and to compare European legislation in this sector with that of the two biggest players in the fashion world: the United States and China.
