Partner Simon Batifort has been invited to speak on a panel on “International Law and Compensation: Recent Developments” on 21 January 2025 at the United Nations in Vienna on the side of the 50th meeting of UNCITRAL Working Group III on the reform of investor-State dispute settlement (ISDS). The panel will be introduced by UNCITRAL Secretary Anna-Joubin Bret and will also feature Sylvie Tabet (delegate of Canada), Mariana Pinto Schmidt (delegate of Chile), Deborah Aikins (delegate of Ghana), Prof. Martins Paparinskis (UCL), and Prof. Chiara Giorgetti (Richmond).
The panel will focus on recent developments related to compensation and international law, including the 2024 decision by the United Nations International Law Commission to include compensation for the damage caused by internationally wrongful acts in its long-term programme of work, recent decisions on compensation, and provisions on compensation in new international instruments. The aim is to provide UNCITRAL Working Group III delegates with helpful information for the ISDS reform discussion.
London-based International Arbitration partner Lise Johnson is also attending the meeting as a delegate of the Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment.
