Ibanez Belen

Belén María Ibañez is an associate in the International Arbitration group. Her practice focuses on public international law and international arbitration. In particular, she has experience on arbitrations conducted under the auspices of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). Her experience also includes advising on various issues of public international law as well as in an inter-State dispute before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and other inter-State dispute settlement bodies.

Prior to joining Curtis, Ms. Ibañez worked as a legal advisor at the Argentine Treasury Attorney General’s Office (Procuración del Tesoro de la Nación), where she represented Argentina in investment arbitration proceedings under the auspices of the ICSID, the UNCITRAL and the ICC and was an assistant professor of public international law at the Universidad de Buenos Aires. She was also a legal assistant to Professor Dire Tladi at the United Nations International Law Commission in Geneva, where she conducted research on peremptory norms of general international law (jus cogens). During her LL.M. studies at New York University School of Law, she worked as a research assistant to Professor Benedict Kingsbury.

Ms. Ibañez currently serves as co-chair of the Dispute Resolution Interest Group of the American Society of International Law.

While in law school, Ms. Ibañez was a member of the first Universidad de Buenos Aires’ team to win the international rounds of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition.
