Fluent in English and Spanish, and conversant in Portuguese, Elisa Botero has advised clients on a wide range of international deals and disputes in various industries. A technology enthusiast, Ms. Botero has focused on understanding and tackling emerging legal issues arising in the nascent hydrogen, blockchain and artificial intelligence industries. Her experience in both corporate and dispute matters has led Latinvex to rank Ms. Botero among its Top 100 Female Lawyers in Latin America for Arbitration & Litigation and Corporate/M&A for three consecutive years.
Ms. Botero has extensive experience in a wide range of cross-border corporate and transactional matters. She has worked on project development deals, financings, M&A transactions, joint ventures, private funds, and various commercial agreements across industries and jurisdictions.
Leveraging her multilingual skills and training in civil and common law systems, Ms. Botero excels at cross-border negotiations and is able to effectively handle multifaceted deals and overcome challenges that arise in multijurisdictional transactions.
Her corporate experience includes advising family offices, fund managers, startups, high-net-worth individuals, corporations, and sovereign entities in corporate matters in the United States and Latin America.
Ms. Botero represents sovereign States, state-owned entities and companies in high-stakes international disputes, with her experience spanning both commercial and investment arbitration.
She frequently publishes and speaks on topics related to international arbitration and is praised by clients for her commitment, “attention to detail” and for having her “hands on the facts” (Legal 500 Latin America 2024).
With a background in the traditional oil and gas sector, Ms. Botero developed an early interest in hydrogen as a low-carbon solution to advance the energy transition. Her interest in hydrogen soon developed into a broader passion for new technologies and their potential to transform and disrupt traditional sectors. Ms. Botero now spearheads multiple initiatives surrounding these innovations at Curtis, including forming dedicated industry groups in hydrogen, blockchain and AI. She also leads efforts to integrate AI safely into our Firm’s legal operations. Her multifaceted experience allows Ms. Botero to guide clients on both established and cutting-edge industries and bridge traditional sectors with transformative technologies.
A member of the Firm’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee, Ms. Botero spearheaded the development of a continuing legal education (CLE) seminar titled “Implicit Bias in the Legal Profession,” which explores unconscious biases and how they impact legal practice and gives participants concrete response techniques to help address them. This complimentary training and diversity initiative satisfies the New York State CLE Board’s one-credit hour requirement in the category of Diversity, Inclusion and Elimination of Bias.
