Dr. Marat Umerov represents clients from around the globe in international dispute resolution and international trade matters related to metals and mining, energy, manufacturing, telecommunications and other sectors.

International Arbitration and Trade

Dr. Umerov has extensive experience in international arbitrations under the rules of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), the United Nations Commission on International Trade and Law (UNCITRAL), and the rules of other dispute resolution forums. In international trade, he represents companies and governments in countervailing duty (CVD) investigations and in court proceedings related to agencies’ determinations.

Economics Expertise

Prior to joining Curtis, Dr. Umerov served as secretary of arbitral tribunals, and assisted tribunal secretaries at ICSID in disputes arising under bilateral investment treaties, host countries’ investment laws, the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT), and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). He has also worked at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and was a research fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Moscow and Washington, D.C., where he focused on issues of economics and security in Central Asia and the Caucasus and wrote a dissertation on Egypt’s modern political and economic processes.

Thought Leadership

A prolific speaker and writer, Dr. Umerov has for several years given lectures on substantive and procedural subjects of international arbitration at the International Law Institute. He co-authored Problems of "Investment" and "Investor" Notions in Investor-State Dispute Settlement, which was published in the 2017 edition of Investment Treaty Arbitration and International Law. He also served as a peer reviewer for the 2010-2011 Yearbook on International Investment Law & Policy.
