Mohannad El-Murtadi’s practice focuses on investor-state disputes, international law and international commercial arbitration. He advises on a broad range of dispute resolution matters across different sectors, with a particular focus on oil and gas, and construction disputes.

International Arbitration

Mr. El-Murtadi has acted as counsel for states, national oil companies, state-owned and commercial entities, and sovereign wealth funds in arbitrations under the rules of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), the Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC), and the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) in a wide range of sectors, including construction and infrastructure, natural resources, oil and gas, and transportation. In addition, he has been involved in numerous enforcement and other local proceedings arising from international arbitrations and has advised governments and state entities on enforcement actions.

Mr. El Murtadi is admitted to the bars of New York, Washington D.C., and Libya, and has full rights of audience before the courts of the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) and Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM). He is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb).

Mr. El Murtadi regularly speaks and publishes on matters related to arbitration and international treaties. He was part of the Steering Committee that helped organize New York’s first Africa Arbitration Day, in which he also chaired a panel discussion regarding the Africanization of international investment law. He also recently spoke before the International Arbitration Club of New York regarding interim and conservatory measures in international arbitration.

International Corporate

In addition to his arbitration experience, Mr. El-Murtadi has represented clients in joint venture and corporate disputes, and on corporate transactions in the oil and gas sector involving major international oil companies (IOCs). He has also advised clients on matters such as corporate governance, criminal and civil investigations and proceedings, and assets search and recovery.

The matters he has been involved in include jurisdictions such as Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Libya, Venezuela, Norway, Switzerland, France, Italy, India, the United States, and the United Kingdom. The total value of arbitrations he has been involved in exceeds US$30 billion.
